South Australia’s Mike Corren turned in a vintage performance to upset top seed Rex Hedrick and claim the Barossa Valley Toyota Open squash tournament in Tanunda on Sunday.

Corren made it four tournaments in a row on the Australian Squash Tour when he beat Hedrick in straight games 11-8, 11-7, 11-7.

The evergreen Corren has now won an incredible 41 titles on the men’s professional tour and is unbeaten in his last 18 matches, and heads to next week's South Australian Open aiming for five in a row.

The women’s event was won by Melbourne 23-year-old Melody Francis, who came from two games down to overhaul New Zealander Amanda Landers-Murphy 6-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-8.
Francis had earlier beaten fellow Australian Institute of Sport member Sarah Cardwell in the semi-finals.

"Tough 5 setter 2-0 down #JokeComeback," tweeted the new champion. "Now to drive home to Melbs #Wine & Muscle Cramps For Company."

Top seeds reach Barossa finals
Andrew Dent reports

Top seed Rex Hedrick cruised into the semi-finals of the Barossa Valley Toyota Open in Tanunda with two comfortable wins on Saturday.

Hedrick accounted for Queensland youngster Tom Calvert in the second round before downing eighth seeded Englishman Reuben Phillips 11-7, 11-5, 11-1.

He was joined in the final four by second seed Mike Corren, fifth ranked Canadian Matthew Serediak and Egyptian surprise packet Omar Khaled Khalifa.

The top four women’s seeds all made the semi-finals with only Amanda Landers-Murphy pushed beyond three games, the Kiwi needing five games to see off countrywoman Megan Craig.

Melody Francis, Sarah Cardwell and Milou van der Heijden all won in straight games.

In Sunday's semi-finals the top seeds again triumphed, Hedrick and Corren both winning in straight games, Francis and Landers-Murphy both needing four games to progress.
