20-Jan,
Round One:
SEEDS PREVAIL IN
FIRST ROUND IN CALGARY
Bob Ballinger reports
The first round of play in the10th 2011 Talisman Energy Bankers Hall
Club Pro-Am being played in downtown Calgary brought some order back
to the event after the upsets in the qualifying round, as the top
four seeds all won comfortably to move on to quarter final play.
The lunch time session saw Alan Clyne of Scotland beat
Australia’s Matthew Karlwalski in three very tight games, 11/8,
11/8, 11/7; Canada’s Thomas Brinkman handled qualifier Gavin
Perrett in three straight 11/5, 11/6, 11/4; Andrew McDougall
from Calgary beat qualifier Grayson Witcher in three comfortable
games 11/1, 11/4, 11/1; and #4 seed Max Lee of Hong Kong
looked very good in taking out England’s Rory Pennell in three games
11/9, 11/6, 11/5.
The evening session matches produced a lot of exciting matches with
Canadian interest in each of them.
First up Malaysia’s Nafiizwan Adnan, seeded third here,
showed no mercy on qualifier and tournament organizer Bob Ballinger
taking the match 11/2, 11/2, 11/8; Dane Sharp came back from
to two games down to beat his fellow Canadian Matthew Serediak 9/11,
9/11, 11/8, 14/12, 11/5; Canadian Junior champion and local star
Andrew Schnell was very impressive despite losing to top seed
Chris Simpson of England 11/9, 11/6, 11/6; and lastly Andrew’s
brother Graeme Schnell was perhaps only a few rallies away from
producing an upset over Canadian star Robin Clarke but Clarke
hung in for a hard fought 13/11, 7/11, 11/7, 11/6 victory.
So down to the final eight now and all four seeds safely through
with a lot of great squash still to come here.
19-Jan, Qualifying:
LOCALS STEAL THE SHOW IN CALGARY QUALIFYING
Bob Ballinger reports
The first and final qualifying rounds of the10th 2011 Talisman
Energy Bankers Hall Club Pro-Am being played in downtown Calgary
produced perhaps a first in PSA history or at the very least a truly
rare occurrence where the top four seeded PSA players were all
bounced by local players who each earned a spot in the main draw of
this tournament.
First up was former collegiate star Grayson Witcher taking
out Eric Dingle who grew up in Calgary but now resided in Montreal.
This was a very entertaining and tough match as evidenced by the
score line. WItcher was able to take the back and forth match due in
large part to his ability to win the majority of the crucial points
and tougher rallies. Next up for him will be a match against Andrew
McDougall of Canada.
Recent arrival to Calgary Gavin Perrett was next up in the
lunch time session against England's Jonathon Geekie and was in
control throughout this match making Geekie's first visit to Canada
perhaps not such a memorable one. Perrett will now take on Canada's
Thomas Brinkman in a main draw encounter.
The first match of the evening session saw perhaps the top players
in the qualifying draw going at it with the top seed Justin Todd of
Canada going against local star Graeme Schnell. The lively
courts and the altitude ball being used at Bankers Hall Club seemed
to suit Schnell as he was able to secure his spot in the main draw
with a well earned 3-1 victory and main draw match up with Canadian
Robin Clarke.
Last match of the evening session saw tournament organizer and club
professional Bob Ballinger complete the local players sweep
as he took out Mexico's Armando Olguin 3/1 and will now meet #3 seed
Wan Adnan of Malaysia in the main draw.
So things are under way in the Stampede city in the PSA event and
also in the popular amateur events of the tournament. Stay tuned as
more surprises are a strong possibility in the main draw with some
very exciting matches coming up on Thursday.

Double figures for Bankers Hall
Bob Ballinger reports
The 10th version of the Talisman Energy Bankers Hall Club Pro-Am is
set to begin in downtown Calgary, Alberta.
Top seed this year is current world #42 Chris Simpson from
England who would love to improve on his semi final result here a
year ago. Standing in his way could be the second seed Alan Clyne
from Scotland who two years ago rolled into the final of this
tournament all the way through qualifying.
Malaysia’s Nafiizwan Adnan and Hong Kong’s Max Lee
round out the seeds. The rest of the main draw shows a strong
Canadian content with Robin Clarke, Matthew Serediak,
Dane Sharp, and Thomas Brinkman all positioned to try
and bring this title back to Canada.
Also in the main draw and by no means just taking up spots there are
local Calgary squash stars Andrew McDougall the number 7 seed
and current Canadian Junior champion Andrew Schnell. Schnell
will be in tough though in what should be a very interesting first
round match with the top seed Simpson. Main draw play begins on
Thursday with the final round of qualifying going on Wednesday.
As well as the PSA event there is the always popular amateur events
in this tournament. How popular … well the tournament went live
December 1st accepting entries and 24 hours later it was sold out
with 157 entries signing up to play and then there was another 55
that went onto the waiting list after that.
So a great tournament is about to begin and a new PSA champion will
be crowned here and will join a very impressive list of past
champions which include Viktor Berg from Canada (2001), Borja Golan
from Spain (2003), Cameron Pilley from Australia (2004), Tommy
Berden from Netherlands (2005), Matt Giuffre from Canada (2006),
Daryl Selby from England (2007), Shahier Razik from Canada (2008)
and Arturo Salazar of Mexico the past two years in 2009 and 2010.
This tournament is also part of the Canadian Squash Circuit which
features PSA events in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina,
Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal, and Halifax.
