just arrived back from Canada (World Women’s Teams) a couple
of days ago. I’m feeling good about the competition, I think
it’s the first Australian Closed Championship I’ve actually
played in, so great to play and exciting for whoever will
take it out.”

HISTORY
The Australian Closed (open to Australian residents only)
was first held in 2003 at the Bendigo Squash Club with Sarah
Fitz-Gerald defeating Dianne Desira 9-1, 9-6, 9-4 for the
Women’s crown. The Men’s event was also an all Victorian
affair with Cameron White overpowering Mark Price the
younger brother of (then) world no 21 Paul Price, 15-9,
15-13, 15-5.
In 2004, the Closed was again hosted by Bendigo Squash Club
and this time registered as a PSA Closed Satellite and a
WISPA Super Challenger event. In a repeat of the 2003 event,
Sarah Fitz-Gerald defeated Dianne Desira 9-1, 9-1, 9-1 while
former world no 5, Dan Jenson from South Australia,
outlasted Cameron White in an enthralling and hard fought
five games 13-15, 16-17, 15-4, 15-8, 15-5.
2005 saw Bendigo continue the hosting role and the men’s and
women’s events again listed on the PSA and WISPA circuits.
Dan Jenson was top seed but it was Cameron Pilley (NSW),
ranked 13 places lower, who took control early and cruised
to a 11-8, 11-6, 11-8 victory. Sarah Fitz-Gerald was a late
withdrawal from the women’s event with a toe injury and
fellow Victorian Amelia Pittock took full advantage ,
dispensing with the hapless Dianne Desira 9-3, 9-1, 9-2.
For the fourth year in succession, Bendigo hosted the 2006
Closed event. The PSA event went to Dan Jenson (SA) who
fought back from a first game loss to close out Cameron
White 6-11, 11-2, 11-9, 11-6. while a 20 year old from Taree,
NSW, Kasey Brown overpowered the 2005 titleholder Amelia
Pittock to complete a rare double having won the Australian
Open as well.
The 2007 Closed event was held in Melbourne and again listed
on the PSA and WISPA circuits. In the Men’s Championship,
experience prevailed over youth with the 33-year-old Mike
Corren (SA) defeating the Australian Junior Champion, Ryan
Cuskelly (NSW) 11-3, 9-11, 11-8, 11-8. Kasey Brown, now
ranked 16 in the world, won her second consecutive Closed
title defeating Donna Urquhart (NSW) in the final 9-1, 9-2,
9-1.
NSW hosted the 6th Australian Closed at Thornleigh in Sydney
and elevated the event to a PSA/WISPA National Closed
status. In the Men’s Championship two talented up and coming
circuit players in Scott Arnold (NSW) and Steve Finitsis (QLD)
battled it out before Arnold won in 4, 7-11, 11-4, 14-12,
11-4. Kasey Brown won her third consecutive title, again
defeating Donna Urquhart 9-5, 9-2, 9-7 in the closest Closed
women’s final yet.
Brisbane took on the 2009 Closed event and local Zac
Alexander was victorious in the men's event with NSW's Donna
Urquhart taking the women's title. |
