16th Asian Team Championship
01-05 May 2012, Kuwait

India claim, Pakistan retain ...

Just as Pakistan retained their men’s title with a pair of nailbiting victories by Farhan’s Zaman and Mehboob over their higher-seeded Indian opponents, India’s Joshna Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal did the same in beating their higher-ranked Hong Kong opponents to claim the women’s title for the first time.

Sat 5th, Finals

Women:
India 2-0 Hong Kong

Joshna Chinappa 3-1 Joey Chan
       11-3, 11-8, 8-11, 11-8
Dipika Pallikal 3-0 Annie Au
       11-8, 12-10, 11-8

Men:
Pakistan 2-0 India

Farhan Mehboob 3-2 Saurav Ghosal

10-12, 6-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-9 (3-2)
Farhan Zaman 3-2 Siddarth Suchde
           11/6, 11/7, 11/13, 7/11, 11/9

The Indian girls we absolutely outstanding today, reports Indian National Coach Cyrus Poncha, against all odds, they beat the favored no. 1 seeds Hong Kong and defending champions to win their maiden Asian Senior Squash title here in Kuwait.

Joshana Chinappa went on first against Joey Chan who is ranked over 30 places above her. Joshana was unperturbed by this and stamped her class right from the beginning to take advantage of the fact that the evening before her opponent had to endure five hard games against her Malaysian counter part Delia Arnold.

Joshana aggressive play laced with delicate drops and deception was simply too much for Joey to handle as she dropped the first game in less than 10 min 11-2.

The second game was equally impressive as Joshana pushed on aggressively to win 11-8. Joey seemed to be warming up in the third game and her shots were more effective as he had Joshana scurrying around the court.

Unaffected by the third game loss Joshana game back with a vengeance and wrapped up the fourth game and match to give India the much needed first point.

Dipika Pallikal went on next against Annie Au who is world ranked 7. Dipika has never beaten Annie in a tournament before but this does not matter, in a team event anything can happen.

Dipika's aggression seemed effective against Annie who is renowned for a steady lob and drop game. Dipika kept the pressure on throughout the match with her aggressive play and Annie did not have any answer for that style of play.

Annie made a gallant fight back in the third but Dipika held her nerves to claw back from 4-7 winning 6 straight points to help India collect their first ever Asian Senior Women’s title, which has eluded them, all this while.

Overall, it was a class act from Dipika.

On the contrary the Indian men failed to lift the title as Pakistan won both matches 3-2 to retain the title.

A charged up Farhan Zaman cheered on by dozens of local enthusiasts pushed Siddharth Suchde to the point of almost being beaten 3-0.

The fighter he is, Siddharth clung on to save 3 match balls in the third, to take the third and fourth games.

It was nip and tuck all the way to 9-9 where Siddharth slipped and gave Zaman match ball. Zaman grabbed the opportunity and finished the match with an outright cross-court winner.

Saurav Ghosal was up against no1 Pakistani Farhan Mehboob who is know for his shot making abilities.

Today this did not fail him as he clawed his way back from a 0-2 deficit to clinch the match in 5 games.

“Lost 2-0 to Pakistan in the final with both Sidd & I losing 11-9 in the 5th. Absolutely devastated!!” tweeted Ghosal.

Indians double up as Malaysia crash out

The semi-finals of the Asian Team Championships in Kuwait saw India reach both finals for the first time as Malaysia, seeded two in the men's and women's events, lost out in both.

India's men were tested by hosts Kuwait, but Saurav Ghosal and Harinderpal Sandhu both won tough encounters to put the top seeds through.

Sandhu came through a fast-paced, hard-hitting and often physical encounter against Fayez Mohammed, narrowly winning each of the three games to put India ahead, and Ghosal stuck to his gameplan of a slow pace and keeping play mainly on Abdullah Al Mezayen's  backhand to edge past the talented Kuwaiti in four games to put India into the final.

The Indian women also needed just two matches as Dipika Pallikal and Anaka Alankamony both won with a little more to spare than their male team-mates.

Coach Cyrus Poncha was delighted: "It's the first time our men have made the final since they did so in the first tournament in 1981, so to have them back in the final along with the women is a tremendous achievement.

"This is without a doubt the best team, men and women, that we've ever been able to field. The players have all made great progress over the last few years, with most of them playing full time on the PSA and WSA tours which has really made a big difference."

Malaysia suffered double defeat at the hands of Pakistan in the men's event as Farhan Mehboob and Nasir Iqbal continued their winning run, while Hong Kong reached the final with a nail-biting win over the Malaysian women.

Malaysia's Siti Munirah Jusoh, playing her best squash of the tournament, and Hong Kong's Annie Au and  won the first two matches to set up a decider between Joey Chan and Delia Arnold.

The Malaysian led twice, but Chan levelled at one-all and then two-all, and the decider went point for point to 9-all. Chan earned her first match ball at 10-9, but had to save two match balls for Arnold as the game went into extended extra points.

Eventually Chan took it on her fifth match ball, 16-14 after 76 minutes to set up a repeat of the final of two years ago.

"Hong Kong's women are all ranked higher than ours, whereas in the men our players are higher ranked," said Poncha of tomorrow's finals which sees both Indian teams take on the title holders.

"But it doesn't always work out according to rankings, all I know is that we'll be going into the finals confident of our players' ability, putting our best foot forward, and giving it all."

Thu 3rd, Day Three:
Pakistan take out HK to reach semis

Having suffered an upset defeat at the hands of hosts Kuwait yesterday, fourth seeds Pakistan faced the prospect of missing out on the semi-finals for the first time ever as they took on third seeded Hong Kong in the quarter-finals.

But 3/1 wins for Farhan Mehboob and Nasir Iqbal gave Pakistan an unassailable lead as they avoided that fate.

In the semi-finals they'll meet second seeds Malaysia who certainly didn't have it all their own way despite beating Jordan 3-0.

Top seeds India made short work of Japan, and they'll meet Kuwait, who took advantage of yesterday's upset as they beat Korea 3-0 to advance to the semis for, probably, the first time.

India give Malaysia a tough task

The women's pool stage concluded with the top four seeds going through to the semis, but India's upset win over second seeds Malaysia means that the Malaysians must face top seeds Hong Kong while India take on fifth seeds Korea who capitalised on their first day upset win over Japan.
