Four for Malaysia
Andrew Cross reports

The final day of the 21st Asian Junior Championships Kish Island, Iran came to an end today with Malaysia walking away with four titles, India, Pakistan, Hong Kong and Jordan sharing the rest.

Malaysia won the first title of the day when Ng Eain Yow successfully defended his under 17 title defeating Mohammed Al Saraj in three games. On the court next to this two young Indian players were battling it out for their first Asian title but it was Top seed Veer Chotrani that defeated second seed Yash Fatde. Four tight games were very even but it was Veer that just held on to win when it looked like Yash was going to fight back after trailing heavily in the fourth to close the gap to 10.9 but Veer survived the last point to win.

In the Under 15 age group Jordanian Ibrahim Abulaban capped off a dream week for him when he defeated Malaysia’s Eugene Heng. The first game was tight but Eugene made too many errors and in the end that cost him the game. After winning the first game all of the confidence was with the Jordanian and he never looked back to claim his first title.

As with the last few years the Boys under 19 final has been the highlight of the competition, has usually gone to five games and been decided by the smallest of margins. Today was no exception Kush Kumar and Tayyab Aslam played all the way to an 11.9 in the fifth which the Pakistani player won.

The game saw some good squash but a lot of blocking and not really much clearing off the ball. Kush looked to have established a good advantage at 2.1 up in games and leading 6.4 but conceded a penalty stroke for blocking Aslam and then never got another point in the fourth. The fifth started at a fast pace and it was point for point all the way but two tins at the end from Kush gave Aslam the title.

In the Girls events Andrea Lee and Zoe Foo two long-time rivals did battle again in the under 17 final as ever it went the full distance. Andrea was leading two games to love but then Zoe fought back to win the next two games. It was Andrea though that won her second title in two years.

Aifa Azman from Malaysia was next on to court where she beat Lau Tin Yan from Hong Kong to win her first Asian Junior Title.

Vanessa Raj finally won an Asian Junior title on her last attempt where she defeated Tze Lok Ho in three games for Malaysia to win their first under 19 title since 2009.

Malaysia were looking for a clean sweep of all the Girls titles but Hong Kong’s Lau Hui Lam had other ideas when she defeated top seed Nur Aliah also in three games.

A huge Thank you to Iran squash, Alee Reza and his team this week for their help and organisation of an amazing event here in Kish Island and we will be back to Iran for the Asian Juniors next year.

25-Jun, Day Four
Semis day in Kish
Andrew Cross reports

Semi Finals day in Iran saw some very interesting matches throughout all of the age groups.

In the boys Under 13 event last year’s Runner up Veer Chotrani remained on course for his first title when he saw off his team mate Navaneeth Prabhu. The other semi-final was a bit tighter but the second seeded Indian Yash Fadte played the bigger points slightly better than Malaysia’s Shawn Tai but this was a very competitive game. One title for India tomorrow.

In the under 15 age group both the top seeds were removed from the event, Jordan's Ibrahim Abulaban removed top seed Jesse Foo in three games and in the other Semi Final Eugene Heng removed second seed Dev Vazirani.

In the Under 17 age group the top two seeds made it through to the final - Ng Eain Yow needed three games to beat Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Yiu whereas Mohammed Alsaraj took four games to see off Ling To Yu also from Hong Kong.

In the under 19 age group there were two pretty straight forward matches for the top two seeds as Kush Kumar and Tayyab Aslam needed just three games to see of Israr Ahmed and Syafiq Kamal.

In the Girls Under 13 age group Aifa Azman defeated team mate Rusydina Rosli to set up a final match with Lau Tin Yan after she defeated second seed Samita Sivakumar.

Nur Aliah remains on course to win her second Asian Junior title but standing in her way tomorrow will be Lau Hui Lam from Hong Kong.

The Girls under 17 title will be an all Malaysian affair after Zoe Foo and Andrea Lee both made the finals after gruelling five game matches with Chan Ho Ching and Harshit Kaur. This final will be a repeat of the under 15 final from last year.

The last final of tomorrow will be a battle between the top two seeds in the Girl Under 19 age group, Tze Lok Ho and Vanessa Raj. Lok Ho and Vanessa both needed just three games to beat Tanvi Khanna and Choi Uen Shen.

24-Jun, Day Three:
Quarter-finals in Kish
Andrew Cross reports

A long day of matches in the 21st Asian Junior Championships, Kish Island saw the event enter the quarter final stage of the event.

In the boys Under 13 there will be three Indian players as well as one Malaysian going in search of their first Asian Junior titles. Last year’s runner up Veer Chotrani looks the firm favourite and he will play team mate Navaneeth Prabhu in tomorrow’s semi-final.

Shawn Tai had the most difficult match against To Wai Lok but managed to survive a gruelling 41 minute battle to win through in four games. Shawn will play second seed Yash Fadte after he defeated Iranian Danial Gharooni in three games.

In the Boys Under 15 top seed Jesse Foo set up a semi-final showdown with 5/8 seed Ibrahim Abulaban after they defeated Chaitanya Shah from India and Muhammed Dorosham Khan from Pakistan in three games. In the lower half of the draw Eugene Heng needed all five games to see off a strong challenge from Law Yat Long. Second seed Dev Vazirani won through to the semis after defeating Jordanian Abedalkader Ahmad Jeitan in three games.

In the under 17s Ng Eain Yow picked up his performance from yesterday to see off the last home hopeful in Alireza Shameli he will play Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Yiu in the semi-finals. Hong Kong will also be represented in the lower half of the draw through Ling To Yu and he takes on Mohammed Alsaraj for a place in the final.

U19 top seed Kush Kumar was pushed the full distance by Asim Khan but having levelled up the match at two games all the Pakistani player seemed to run out of steam in the fifth as it was all one way traffic. The other quarter final matches went the way of the seeded players.

Reigning British Junior Open champion Aifa Azman remains on course for her first Asian Junior title taking just 11 minutes to win her quarter final match.

In the Under 15 age group top seed Nur Aliah from Malaysia will need to compete with three Hong Kong players to win her second Asian Junior title. Aliah will face Tang Yan Yi in the semi-final and in the lower half Cheng Nga Ching will play Lui Hiu Lam.

In the Girls under 17 Zoe Foo knocked out top seed and team mate Sivasangari in three games. Zoe will now play Chan Ho Ching in tomorrow’s semis. In the lower half both Harshit Kaur from India and Andrea Lee from Malaysia were taken the full distance by Ho Ka Wing from Hong Kong and Mihiliya Methsarani from Sri Lanka.

In the Girls Under 19 age group the top two seeds won but there was bad news for both three four seeds as they lost out. Rachel Arnold defeated by Tanvi Khanna and Lakshya Ragavendran was defeated by Choi Uen Shen from Hong Kong.

23-Jun, Day Two:
Down to the quarters in Kish
Andrew Cross reports

The second day of the Asian Junior championships saw all of the top players in action with a full day of squash at the Olympic Squash Centre, Kish Island.

It was reigning Under 17 Champion Ng Eain Yow from Malaysia that was made to work the hardest by Ranjit Singh from India. Yow led twice by was pegged back by Singh twice and soon we were level at 5-5 in the fifth game. It was Yow however that held it together slightly better winning the fifth 11-9.

In tomorrow’s quarter final Yow will play Local boy Alireza Shameli after he survived a see saw battle Hamza Alzubaidi from Jordan. Both seemed to win a game very easily before losing the next game very easily. Alireza won the fifth game very easily 11-3.

Second seed Mohammed Alsaraj looks like he is benefiting from training in England with a comfortable three nil won over Mohammed Khan.

All the Boys under 19 top 8 seeds progressed to the last 8 and there should be some very exciting quarter final matches in this age group tomorrow night.

In the under 15 age group it was a very similar story with all the top 8 seeds progressing but fourth seed Muhammed Deemantha Khan from Pakistan was made to go the full distance by Aryan Parekh before he prevailed 11.5 in the decider.

In the boys under 13 age group there was only really one upset when To Wai Lok from Hong Kong defeated Advait Adik from India in three games. Wai Lok looks to have the physical advantage at the minute and might be hard to stop this week.

In the Girls event which started today the majority of the seeded players made it through to the quarter finals. Tomorrow’s line ups look very interesting especially in the Girls under 17 age group which looks to provide four very interesting quarter finals.

22-Jun, Day One:
Asian Juniors under way
Andrew Cross reports

Day one of the 21st Asian Junior championships in Kish Island, Iran got underway today with 150 competitors from 9 countries participating in the event. Most of the top seeds received a bye on the opening day and they will be in action tomorrow. It’s great to see how sport unites the world in so many ways and I’m sure that will be evident this week.

Iran have done a fantastic job on welcoming all the players to this beautiful island, meeting everyone at the airport as well as making sure all our needs are well looked after.

There were some good opening matches Shameel Wakeel a talented junior from Sri Lanka who made the semi finals of these championships a few years ago played Noor Abdulkareem Sabeeh from Iraq, the opening two games were tight which Shameel won before he ran out an easy winner in the third game.

In the under 19 age group Ravindu Laksiri took the opening two games against local boy Sajad Zareian. It looked as though Ravindu was going to win in three games similar to his compatriot Shameel however Sajad spurred on by the huge vocal home crowd that had gathered outside his court was not going to go down without a fight. Sajad came back to win the third and held game balls in the fourth to take it to a fifth but he couldn’t quite convert with Ravindu booking his place in the last 16 against second seed Tayyab Aslam from Pakistan.

In the evening we were treated to the Opening ceremony which was filled with local music and a local performance on some local instruments which was very impressive.
