Hedrick and Lindsay claim Canberra crowns
Melbourne’s Rex Hedrick ended the giant-killing run of exciting
Egyptian Omar Marei to win the ACT Open squash tournament in
Canberra on Sunday.
Hedrick claimed the second professional title of his career when he
beat Marei, 20, in four games 11-9, 11-9, 3-11, 11-7 in a thrilling
final to the latest Australian Squash Tour tournament.
The 23-year-old Hedrick, who broke through for his first tour title
in January, was able to contain the brilliant shot making of his
Egyptian rival, who had beaten second seeded South Australian Justin
Beard in the quarter-finals and fifth ranked New Zealander Paul Coll
in the semis.
Earlier, New Zealand’s Kylie Lindsay ended hopes of a Victorian
double when she beat Melbourne’s Melody Francis 11-5, 6-11, 11-8,
11-3 in the women’s final.
The top seeded Francis later conceded that Lindsay had been too
sharp as the 28-year-old Kiwi claimed her fourth title on the
women’s tour.
