Five Nations Juniors 2011
22-24 Apr, Surrey Sports Park
Final Day : Double Top for England

England remained dominant in both the U13 and U15 categories gaining maximum points. The U13 team only dropped one game throughout the three days while the U15s dropped just 4 games. France were strong contenders and it looks as if they will be a real threat to England next year as they host the event.

The fight for places 3 to 5 in the U15 event was strongly contested with Scotland and Wales having a crunch match against each other on day 1. Scotland dug in well and their girls' winning performances at 4 and 5 aided their victory greatly. When it came to the finishing standings both teams were tied and Scotland came 3rd on the number of ties won.

Ireland did well to beat Wales in the U13 event to come 4th overall, While the London team should be pleased with nealry causing a upset over the French team.

Overall the event has been a great success. On behalf of England Squash & Racketball I would like to thank all the teams for coming over, the Referees: Malcom Whiteley, Colin McKenzie and Ernie Alcock, Julie Chappell for her assistance throughout the event, Phil Hall and Dave Lazarus for their voluntary help, Surrey Sports Park for hosting the event impeccably and Holiday Inn Guildford for excellent accomdating facilities.

Also thanks to Steve Cubbins and Framboise for promoting the event on the Squashsite and French SiteSquash.

U15 England v Scotland

This was Gina Kennedy’s first cap for England, and she made a bright start, taking the first 11/7. The Second saw Claire Gadsby find a good length and start to control the ball better, making less unforced errors. Gina lost her depth and width and was soon 10-7 down. But, Gina dug in and came back to win the second 12/10.

The third game was similar to the second and Gina came through to win 11/9. She had to overcome the nerves of her England debut but pulled through well to win 3/0.

At fourth strinn Lily Taylor was in control from the beginning and sustained this throughout. By applying pressure to the Scottish number 4 Kirsty Lobban, Taylor gained a comfortable 2-0 lead. Lily’s tactical game forced a number of unforced errors from Lobban. In the end Lily’s Skill was too much for Lobban and she won 3-0.

Irish U13s bouyant
Ciara Davey reports

Ireland under 13s are in a bouyant mood after their hard fought victory over Wales this morning.

Adam Fitzgerald, despite his display was outdone by a wiley welsh wizard! Stephanie Ryan's first game and first match of the tournament started as it meant to go on with nerve tingling 14-12 victory. Casey Luther represented ireland well with a 3-1 victory which was hard fought especially in the fourth game winning 14-12. Oisin Dunne gave his all for ireland but unfortunately lost 3-2.

Luke Logan was calmness personified in the deciding match and won 3-0 over a player who recently beat him 3-2. Looking forward to this afternoons encounter with France. Onwards and upwards.

The Ireland under 15s fought a hard battle against Wales with David Ryan and Ryan Luther winning both their matches but unfortunately the team lost 3-2."

U13 England v Wales

At number five Grace Gear was on first playing for England, against Wales' Ayesha Khan. Grace was hitting a solid ball in the warm up and she looked really confident. Grace took the first game 11-1 with a comfortable start. In the second Grace’s skill was too much for the Welsh Number 5 and she won that game 11-4. As Grace got off to a brilliant start in the third it became a victory for Grace Gear of England winning it 11-1 11-4 11-2.

Mark Richmond started off well playing good attacking squash at number three against Jordan Williams to take the first 11-2. In the second he played tight squash forcing the errors from Jordan taking it 11/7. Mark shot to a 7-1 lead in the third, not looking back he took the game 11-3.

Charlie Lee produced a clinical performance not giving an inch to his opponent Josh Lee. He used his speed to chase down an extra shot closing out the match in emphatic style.

Harry Falconer also proved too strong for his welsh opponent, dominating play with a convincing 3-0 win.

Day ONE
Theo Woodward reports

This is an exciting event with the addition of France at the relatively new 6 court facility at the University of Surrey in Guildford.

There is an U13 and U15 event with a team from England, France, Ireland, and Wales in both events. Scotland has a U15 team but no U13 team and in their place is a London Regional Team.

Each team comprises of 3 boys (at 1,2,3) and 2 girls (at 4 and 5).

The Format of the event is a round robin.

England are looking like favourites to win the 5 nations championships with France likely to be their closest rivals.

Day One Roundup

Good day for England not dropping a Match, France look set for second place although London look like they could cause a upset as they won both their matches today. With Scotland Edging Wales in the U15s there is a lot to play for. Bring on day two .

The Match of the Tie was between the numbers 4s:
Lucy Beecroft V Marion Andrianifidy

Unfortunately for Beecroft her concentration slipped slightly in the second causing Marion to get back on track taking the second 6/11.
